Serving in Charlottesville
We are continually thinking about ways that Athletes in Action and the UVA athletic community can uniquely serve the Charlottesville community through the international 'language' of sport. We also believe that we have much to learn from people in the Charlottesville community as we serve.
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen; to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter -- when you see the naked to clothe him and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn ..." (Isaiah 58:6-8)
Come join us on Sunday afternoons for a fun-filled hour or two of soccer with an awesome of group of kids!
In 2009, we began offering a free soccer camp for children in the Southwood neighborhood, 10 minutes from UVA grounds. While the summer camp has grown from 10 to 60 kids and continues to be a highlight of the year (you can also help with this!), it has also led to a biweekly pick-up soccer game through which we build our friendships and start new ones with many in the Charlottesville refugee and international community. These friendships have also become a bridge for several kids and families to connect to God and to the body of Christ. Contact email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to join in the fun!
